Back in the early nineties I saw an exhibition of large abstract paintings by Sir Howard Hodgkin at The Hayward Gallery in London. I was taken by the way in which he used the frame as a continuation of the image by painting over it. Years later I was working on a series of paintings of birds flying through landscapes and decided to do the same thing and show the birds literally flying out of the painting. I wrote “With apologies to Sir HH” on the back of the first of these – which shows I guess that there may be no really original ideas left in art. Discuss.
